What is the Chlorine Institute?

The Chlorine Institute Inc. (CI) founded in 1924, is a technical trade association of companies that are involved in the safe production, distribution and use of chlorine, sodium and potassium hydroxides and sodium hypochlorite, and the distribution and use of hydrogen chloride.

Chlorine chemistry plays a critical role in meeting some of our most basic needs.  Chlorine chemistry enables scientists to pioneer advances in modern medicine and renewable energy.  It helps protect American soldiers and police officers.  Chlorine chemistry transform public health hazards like, drinking water and swimming pools, into modern day conveniences.

Because of chlorine’s nature and its widespread and varied use, the promotion of its safe handling has long been an accepted responsibility of its producers, packagers, distributors and users. The Institute is committed to these efforts.  We offer valuable resources for producers, distributors, packagers, users, and even emergency responders.  From production to disposal, we are committed to ensuring the safe and proper handling of these important materials.
